Facts
When Africans were brought to America slaves in the 1600's they brought with them many foods and styles of cooking. Adding what they brought such as okra, peanuts, sesame seeds, black-eyed peas and rice to the small portion of pork, cornmeal and vegetables they were given by their slavemasters each week, they created recipes now fondly called soul food.
Soul food has grown from its simple beginnings to include a wide range. Thanks to the blending with other cultures such as Caribbean, Spanish and Native Americans, African Americans enjoy a wide range of foods.
Wholesale and retail sources are listed here. If you require special packaging to reflect a given theme, look for companies who offer private labeling or customized packaging.

Tips
Since people of African ancestry eat and drink a variety of foods and beverages, many American distributors feature foods from around the globe.
Because of the many steps involved in getting foods imported in a timely manner, it saves money, time and aggravation to shop with nationwide distributors who often have local stores near you. |
